The best time to investigate apartment noise is before you commit. You do not need to measure every sound scientifically, but you do need to check more than the lobby. Use the same process at every apartment so you can compare what you actually heard.
Start with your own schedule
Write down when you need quiet. Sleeping during the day, taking work calls, and relaxing in the evening create different requirements. A building that feels calm during a lunchtime showing may not fit a renter whose bedroom faces evening activity.
Choose two or three nonnegotiables: a bedroom away from the garage entrance, no direct exposure to a rooftop venue, or a place to take calls without closing every interior door. Specific requirements are easier to search for than a request for a “quiet building.”
Tour the unit you would actually rent
