Miami's public transit is limited—the Metromover runs a 4.4-mile loop through downtown, Brickell, Edgewater, and Omni. Buses exist but are unreliable. Ride-sharing is everywhere. A car-free life in Miami is possible, but only in specific neighborhoods and only if you accept trade-offs.

Where Car-Free Actually Works

Wynwood: Hyper-walkable. Restaurants, bars, galleries, shops all within 5-10 minute walks. Grocery (Whole Foods, smaller markets) is walkable. Rideshare to Brickell or downtown is $8–$15. You'll rideshare 3–4 times a week, spend $60–$100/month, and be fine. Works best if you don't have a job with fixed location.

Edgewater: Connected to downtown by Metromover (8-minute ride). Walkable for groceries and dining. Downtown's walking distance for work or nightlife. Uber/Lyft as backup for non-Metromover trips. Budget $40–$80/month rideshare.

Downtown/Brickell: Metromover hubs. Walkable neighborhoods. But you're living in density—noise, foot traffic, fewer quiet spots. Works if you work downtown or remote. Metromover is free ($0/month) or $11.50 for a monthly pass.

Coconut Grove: Walkable but car-dependent for work commutes. Rideshare budget: $80–$150/month.

Where Car-Free Sucks

Coral Gables, Homestead, Aventura, Wynwood's western edges, Allapattah—all car-dependent. Public transit is sparse. Rideshares are 15+ minute waits. Groceries are 20+ minutes away on foot.

Car ownership in Miami costs: insurance ($100–$200/month), parking ($100–$300/month if you own a unit), gas ($100–$150/month), maintenance ($50/month). Total: $350–$650/month.

But you're limited to Wynwood, Downtown, Brickell, Edgewater. Anywhere else, you need a car or you're frustrated.
